What Is Ferritic Stainless Steel?
After extensive research and testing, we selected this material for our fire pits and grills because it is magnetic and has a higher carbon content than the more common 304/316 stainless steels. This results in much better thermal conductivity, ensuring even heat distribution for better cooking performance. Additionally, it provides a more naturally non-stick surface compared to other stainless steel types.
Care Instructions:
- Season Before Use: Lightly coat with cooking oil and heat for a few minutes to improve non-stick properties. Wipe off excess oil with a paper towel (use heat-protective gloves).
- Cleaning After Use: While still hot, scrape off food residue. For a deeper clean, pour a small amount of water onto the surface and scrub with a sponge. (Be cautious of hot steam—wear protective gloves!) We recommend re-coating with oil after cleaning to protect the surface. Avoid putting this plate in the dishwasher, as harsh chemicals can strip the seasoning.
- Storage Tip: Ensure the plate is completely dry before storing to prevent corrosion.
Important Information:
- These hot plates are cut from steel sheets with an industrial mill finish. They are not polished and have no surface treatments, ensuring they are safe for cooking. Due to the manufacturing process, your hot plate may have visible light scratches or marks, which do not affect performance. Over time, normal use will result in additional surface imperfections, which are purely cosmetic and do not impact functionality.
- Stainless steel will naturally brown and discolour over time, especially when exposed to high heat.
- Recommended Cooking Heat: Use low to medium heat if cooking with the lid down for extended periods. High heat is fine when the lid is up.
- This ferritic stainless steel has a slightly lower corrosion resistance than 304/316 stainless steel, but seasoning with heat and oil creates a protective layer.
- Handle with care—stainless steel has sharp edges.
